We are both really really REALLY looking forward to relaxing on the Greek islands so Athens seems like a quick stop before paradise. :)Nonetheless, we spent the day enjoying our time in a new city and made time to visit the Acropolis, the city of Plaka, and the National Gardens.

Although the Acropolis was quite a stunning monument, I was rather disappointed by the Parthenon and a couple other theaters within the Acropolis. The Parthenon was completely engulfed in a cloak of scaffolding and spray-painted construction markings.
Although signs lead us to believe that reconstruction of the Parthenon occurred in 2004, the site was hardly accessible and the grandeur of this edifice was essentially masked by steel rods and beams. The same held true for several other areas in the Acropolis. It would be great to return when reconstruction is complete so I can truly appreciate its beauty.
We strolled through Plaka, which was supposed to be a really fun, quaint atmosphere with local eateries and hand-made goods, but the city is certainly a ghost town on Sundays. Instead, we took an afternoon nap in the National Gardens and daydreamed about Santorini.
